Design process

Every project is unique with its own creative opportunities and challenges. Whether it's a small urban courtyard garden or a sprawling rural estate, the key to a stress-free process and successful outcome is clear communication at every stage with our clients and the other professionals involved.

1. Initial consultation

We meet on site to discuss and understand the inspirations, aspirations and requirements you have for your project along with budget and timeframe. We will explore the site to get a feeling for its creative potential and its challenges. These early discussions form the basis of a client brief.

2. Survey and analysis

We gather and appraise detailed information about the site, analysing its physical and emotional characteristics. This usually involves a topographic survey of the full site.

3. Design layout

Having gathered all the information, we will develop and present our concept design for discussion. This presentation will include plans, perspective illustrations, supporting images and a materials sample board.

4. Detail drawings and specifications

In order to build the garden to the highest standards a set of detailed drawings and specifications will be produced. These will detail all the built parts of the scheme as well as the plants and planting. Often this stage involves liaising with others involved in the project (architects, engineers, etc) and sometimes local Planning Officers. This package of drawings, once complete, would be issued to a nominated contractor or would go out to tender. The high level of specified information would ensure quotes received for the garden build are accurate.

5. Build Management

Once a landscape contractor is appointed and on site, we will monitor progress of the build on your behalf, ensuring the garden is built to our high standards and in full accordance with our specifications.

We source all the specimen trees, shrubs and other plant material, visiting nurseries to personally select and reserve the most suitable plants. We also source build materials, furniture, planters, light fittings and any other items included within the scheme such as sculpture, fire pits etc.

We hold regular site meetings as part of our monitoring of the build towards a final hand over to the client on approval.

6. Garden maintenance

Once complete, we can recommend maintenance teams who will keep the garden in peak condition. Maintenance notes can be supplied on request along with follow up visits to monitor and advise on the development and growth of the garden.
